The definitive work on Finland’s steam locomotives, published to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Finnish Railway History Society (which coincides with the centenary of the republic).
At the beginning of the railway era, Finland was a Grand Duchy within Russia, and the railways were built to the Russian broad gauge. Early locomotives were 4-4-0s and 0-6-0s of Russian appearance, built in England. They were followed by German and American locos. From 1900 the domestic industry produced distinctive designs, culminating in the handsome Hr1 Pacifics and Tr1 Mikados, which served until the end of steam in 1975.
The technical and operational history is dealt with in detail, also of the narrow gauge and war-time booty locos. Parallell text in Finnish and English. 528 A4 pages with numerous tables, 389 photographs, 97 diagrams and five maps, hardbound. |
