Une longue introduction retrace l’historique du réseau malgache à partir de photos des années 1900 à 1990. Puis un récent voyage nous emmène à la découverte des trois lignes qui constituent le réseau principal exploité par la société Madarail : Tananarive – Tamatave, reliant la capitale au port principal, Moramanga – Lac Alaotra et Tananarive – Antsirabé, sur les hauts plateaux du centre où le rail dépasse 1600 mètres d’altitude. Le trafic marchandises, assuré par des locomotives diesel françaises et chinoises, est prépondérant, mais nous circulons aussi à bord de trains mixtes et d’une superbe Micheline, restaurée pour des excursions.

Plus au sud, la ligne isolée Fianarantsoa – Côte Est joue un rôle de service public indispensable, en desservant une vaste région forestière privée d’autres moyens de communication. Un jour sur deux, un véritable marché s’installe dans les gares pour le passage du train mixte, qui offre un débouché aux produits locaux, ravitaille les villages, apporte les nouvelles du monde et permet de se rendre au chef-lieu. Ici aussi, une courte balade en Micheline permet d’expérimenter le confort des fauteuils en rotin et du roulement sur pneumatiques, comme dans les années 30 !

We bring you a programme covering a somewhat out of the ordinary railway journey over the metre gauge lines of madagascar, the largest island in the Indian Ocean.

A lengthy introductory section retraces the historical development of the Malgache railway system. Then, a recently completed journey of discovery takes the viewer over the three railway lines under the Madarail operation: Tananarive - Tamatave, which links the capital city to the major port on the east coast; Moramanga - Lac Alaotra and lastly Tananarive - Antsirabé, this latter route crossing over the central highlands. Freight trains constitute the majority of traffic, but we have the opportunity to travel on mixed consists and also a superbly restored Micheline rail car, which is used for tourist excursions.

Further to the south, the isolated Fianarantsoa - East Coast line plays an indispensable role in providing a train service for the local inhabitants living in an extensive and remote forested area, which has been deprived of any other means of communication. Outward and return mixed train trips result in a veritable marketplace appearing at station halts along the route, which consequently facilitate outlets for local fresh produce sales, the supply of city goods for the local villages and news from the outside world. Here, in addition, a further short, typical 1930s era riding experience in s second Micheline rail car, also equipped with comfortable wicker arm chair seating smooth riding, pneumatic tyred wheels, just as it was commonplace during the 1930s.
