A class 442 Wessex Electric takes us on superbly smooth ride from Weymouth to Dorchester, Poole and Bournemouth. At Brockenhurst we pass through a stretch of unspoilt New Forest to Southampton.
Now the Wessex becomes an express – one of three an hour between port and capital city. Running at up to 100 mph along the old LSWR quadruple track main line via Basingstoke and Woking, we run through Clapham Junction and into Waterloo.
The contrast between the rural single line east of Dorchester and the dozen or so tracks into London could hardly be greater.
The programme starts with a brief look at the unique street-running Weymouth Quay branch.
